A LETTER FROM FOUNDER JORDAN (JD) ARBUCKLE

I was in New Orleans, driving across the country simply because I wanted to. I enjoy driving. It’s very zen if you do it right. I’d just finished up my hot wings at a local restaurant (4 out of 10 at best), and asked the waitress for a piece of paper. She gave me one from her server book.

I was struggling with some of the following problems:

– Not sticking to important habits.
– Burning out quickly after getting motivated.
– No clear path or “passion” for the future.

Maybe you’ve dealt with similar issues. It’s not very fun. You feel like you are spinning your wheels, or worse, headed backwards. You’re always too busy, and your health declines. It even makes it difficult to feel good about yourself when you don’t have a plan.

I stared out into the city streets as I thought about the cost of not solving these problems. I wouldn’t be able to transfer into a career I enjoyed. I wouldn’t be mentally healthy enough to treat myself and others well. I’d never “get ahead” or be organized and disciplined.

I felt like I was letting go of the helm and allowing the winds to steer my ship.

Think about it. If you don’t have a personal map to follow right now, where are you going? Without a monthly, weekly, and daily strategy, how are you going to get there 

So, I took that piece of scrap paper and used all the tactics in my personal toolkit:

+ I picked my top five core values that made me feel alive.
+ I wrote a mission statement for myself, just like a company.
+ I created long-term, highly specific goals and benchmarks.
+ I selected the corresponding habits I knew I’d love doing.

“Now all I have to do is follow the map,” I thought to myself. Sure, there would be adjustments along the way. But the difference in how I felt about my future was astronomical.

I folded up the paper and slid it into the book I was reading. I left the restaurant, continued my drive, and life moved on. I lived each day in the best way I could: working hard, finding joy, making friends, and enjoying my simple habits.

Three years later, I opened up that same book and the piece of paper I’d forgotten about slipped out. As I read through it, my jaw dropped.

I had completed every single one of my long-term goals. I had continued to uphold my mission and values, year over year.

Some of the goals fulfilled themselves in ways that I had never expected. New connections were made and life events happened that I couldn’t have predicted. But because I was subconsciously following and adjusting my long-term map, it all came together.

That was my first encounter with the power of this process which I now call the Forge. It felt like taking all the raw materials of my life and transforming them into something strong, productive, and healthy.

Over the years, I’ve turned this process into an online course with step-by-step instructions, downloadable tools, and support from myself and other members.
